Miles Drainage at 30

LAMMA 2018 marks the start of Miles Drainage’s 30th Anniversary celebrations.

The company was formed in February 1988 when Peter and Liz Robotham took over the agricultural drainage business from the Miles Family. G Miles & Son had been involved in agriculture since the early 1900’s when they carried out steam ploughing and other farm contracting before progressing into land drainage.

Miles Drainage LimitedIn 1988 Miles Drainage consisted of just five full-time employees including one three-man drainage crew, but now there are 30 people on the payroll in order to carry out the various contracts.

There has been steady growth from diversification into drainage and trenching on cross country gas and water pipelines, whilst the company also operates a fleet of large and small trenchers, rockwheels and topcutters for hire to mostly civil engineering customers on a daily basis.

Most recently with the rapidly growing need for fibre-optic communications, Miles Drainage are operating teams installing cable ducts and services.

Agricultural drainage remains a major part of the business however with the company offering a quality design, installation and maintenance service for all types of farmland throughout the Eastern Counties and beyond.

The major change recently has been how quickly GPS has taken over from the laser for both field surveys and machine guidance. Gone are the days when a stiff breeze or fog would stop us draining

Sports and amenity areas are a further part of the business with Miles Drainage installing both piped and gravel slit drainage systems on sports pitches and golf courses as well as the draining of horse paddocks, gallops and exercise areas

A planned maintenance programme for any drainage system is still as important as it was in 1988 and for further information or advice please call us on 01359 259424
